Burning MemoriesHe struck the match, and lit the makeshift pyre. The dry paper, doused liberally with lighter fluid, caught easily, and mound of letters, cards, photos soon became a small inferno. Leaning back into the lawn chair he stared upwards at the evening sky. The wisps of cloud moved slowly, lazily across the crystal sky. A plane passed overhead, its vapour trail leaving a white streak, fading, dissolving into the bright blue. A smell of smoke filled the air.

The AntThe night is humid, and warm.
I heave myself up onto the wall, looking down at the world. I crack open the can of coke I brought with me, the sharp hiss amongst the quiet street. I stare at it, the drops of water forming on the cool can, slowly, delicate, excruciating. The soft pops and cracks of the bubbles.

I am King of the World.

An ant crawls by, moving hither and thither.

I watch, rapt, as the ant drowns.
